What is the urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is defined by involuntary leakage of urine from the bladder. This includes small amounts of urine leaked with coughing or laughing, as well as a complete inability to control your bladder. Urinary incontinence is classified into two categories: stress and urge incontinence.

Stress incontinence, is often due to a loss of support from the urethra. It is commonly a result of damage to pelvic support structures that occur during childbirth or trauma.  This lack of support can also be accelerated simply due to lack of hormones related to menopause.

Urge incontinence, is also known as overactive bladder.  This is caused by uninhibited contractions of the detrusor muscle allowing the bladder to leak large amounts of urine.  Women usually don’t have time to get to the bathroom prior to the leakage.  Many women feel embarrassed and that there aren’t any solutions.  You don’t have to wear “diapers” for the rest of your life.  Platelet Rich Plasma can treat both types of urinary incontinence.

How Does PRP Treat Urinary Incontinence?

Platelet Rich Plasma, administered as the O-Shot®, has successfully treated and even reversed conditions of incontinence for thousands of women. The PRP, which has been extracted from your own blood, is injected into the tissue around the urethra, which is the tube from which the urine flows out of the body. The injection prompts the platelets to release seven different growth factors, activating powerful stem cells to stimulate the tissues to regenerate and repair damaged cells and tissue.  Most women experience some type of relief from urinary leaking within 1-2 weeks following the O-Shot®; improvement then continues over several weeks.  Successful results include a reduction or elimination of the need for medication to treat their urinary symptoms, or a complete resolution of symptoms.

Why Seek Treatment For Urinary Incontinence?

Symptoms of urinary incontinence are an advancing problem that get progressively worse unless some type of treatment is initiated. Incontinence affects women of all ages, but is most common among older women – it is a typical condition of aging. Up to 35 percent of women over the age of 60 are estimated to have bladder control issues. Incontinence can contribute to depression and a lower quality of life. Women often isolate, avoid activities and social settings out of fear of the lack of bladder control. Many women even avoid sex and exercise to avoid the embarrassment of urinary leaking. Studies have shown that there is a clear link between incontinence in women and depression. An article published in Obstetrics & Gynecology in 2005 surveyed nearly 6,000 women between the ages of 30 and 90. They reported that women experiencing incontinence, had 3 times the likelihood to be diagnosed with depression.  Why risk escalating healthcare issues?

Healthy weight management, routine physical activity and pelvic floor physical therapy has been shown to have a positive impact on a woman’s bladder control. These efforts in combination with PRP can resolve your battle with urinary incontinence – why wouldn’t you want treatment?
